Virtual academic labs that enable competency-oriented learning are a key differentiator of UMUC’s most recognizable programs. The existing solutions was woefully inadequate to prepare our students for what was “next”. I proposed building a solution in-house based around the Amazon Web Service offering WorkSpaces. I developed the business case, partnered with AWS to influence their roadmap, and secured internal investment funding to develop the offering. In six months, I staffed the dedicate team and together we collected requirements, designed a solution and launched a platform that in its first semester served over 3200 students worldwide. Based on current trends, over 17,000 students will be using the solution by Summer 2017. Project Triton has had a material impact on the way our students are learning.
